The Nigeria Labour Congress
has withdrawn the strike notice it served on six commercial banks over the mass
sacking of workers and redundancy in the banking sector on June 15, 2016.
The President of the NLC,
Mr. Ayuba Wabba, said during a joint press briefing with the Director-General
of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Assembly, Dr. Abiodun Oshinowo, that the
decision was taken after a productive meeting of Labour and NECA in Abuja on
Wednesday.
Wabba said that it was
agreed that all hostilities including the strike notice should be put on hold
to await the outcome of a meeting proposed by the Ministry of Labour and
Employment.
He explained that the
leadership of the NLC had been briefed by its affiliate union, the National
Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions Employees, on the extent
of its engagement with the affected banks on the contentious issues.
He said that the meeting
dwelt on the process, the procedure and the position of law on the declaration
of redundancy, non-unionisation of workers and the payment of protection fees
by some of the banks and agreed that the issues be taken to the Federal
Government’s meeting for resolution.
